Rare Races
Rare races are usually found in small quantities in Universes. Of course, depending on overall population, this can be as little as a tiny handful of individuals, or as "large" as roughly several hundred thousand. They are often mistaken for being members of more well-known races, such as Giraffes for Okapi.
Okapi
Phonetics: oh-CAH-pee
Lifespan: 900-1200 Height: 7'00"-10'00" Diet: Omnivore Sex: Binary Type: Non-Pony Stereotype: Unusual, eccentric, bizarre, magical |
All Okapi have vision that differs from most races'. Instead of seeing the world as reflected light, creating colors and shapes, they perceive it as concentrations of Magninium, as if using infrared but for magic rather than heat. Special glasses can be produced that edit the Okapi's vision to be closer to normal, but the technology isn't perfect.
This ability means that Okapi can instantly tell if someone is a higher being or not, as they will be brighter and intensely colored compared to mortals. As such, they sometimes work to test children for Immortal status. There are very few Okapi in Universes, but those that exist are staunchly monogamous and possessive. They're eager to seek out a partner with which to have children with (which will always be Okapi children), and almost never remarry or have affairs. They are deeply loyal, but it is hard to earn their attention and even harder to earn their trust. Please don't mistake them for Ictus Giraffes. |
Kirin
Phonetics: ker-IN
Lifespan: (Indefinite) Height: 5'00"-8'00" Diet: Omnivore Sex: Sexless Type: Non-Pony (Flying) Stereotype: ??? |
Kirin are so rare that the vast majority of citizens in a Universe don't even know what they are. As such, there are little stereotypes or expectations about them hanging in culture.
Kirin form when an enchanted object - a locket, a gemstone, etc. - gathers enough magic within it to form sentience, and then a body. The amount of magic required for this automatically means Kirin are Immortals on the god spectrum, giving them a boost to magic and lifespan. They sport three horns on their head, two wings, and a long tail ending in a clump of hair. Kirin are incapable of having children, and any attempts to splice their DNA into a child cause miscarriages. The only way to produce more Kirin is to intentionally over-enchant objects, or have a higher being create more. Generally, Kirin are blank slates that take on the culture and personalities of the people they form around. They intrinsically know that they are Kirins, but struggle to know what exactly that entails and how they should act. |
Onager
Phonetics: on-AH-jer
Lifespan: 200-300 Height: 5'00"-6'00" Diet: Omnivore Sex: Binary Type: Non-Pony Stereotype: Shy, elusive, two-faced, liar |
Onager are the most common of the rarer races, and look deceptively average. They have a lighter patterning on their lower jaw, belly, and underside of tail, as well as two small antennae protruding from their heads.
This soft exterior hides a dark second form, though - when stressed or experiencing high emotions, an Onager will revert to a monster-esque form, almost like a werewolf. This form is unique and personal to each Onager, and no two's forms will look alike (although families tend to have shared traits through their bloodlines). This second form is capable of using magic and is typically extremely powerful, meant to serve as a panic button to get out of perceived danger. Despite this, Onager try to come off as kindly and sweet. Many dislike their forms (although, of course, some individuals embrace it), but this often leads the other races into thinking they're lying to get guards down. They tend to be loners, although many are grateful for company and enjoy polyamorous relationships. |
Dullahan
Phonetics: dull-AH-han
Lifespan: (Indefinite) Height: ??? Diet: ??? Sex: ??? Type: Non-Pony Stereotype: Obnoxious, loudmouthed, braggart |
Dullahan are Immortals on the god spectrum, and can only be killed if their head is destroyed. They can detach their head from their main body and summon shapes to control a new body or object - the exact shape varies based on individual.
This power means that they can possess objects and influence them to do their bidding - although they have a limited number of shapes they can summon at a time, and the more that are in use, the harder it is to concentrate on each individual object. They tend to be energetic and upbeat, always happy to make a name for themself and lend a hand if needed. They put great pride in their accomplishments and are eager to boast about them if given the chance. Dullahans especially love having a group of people that either date them or dote on them endlessly. Dullahans may look similar to any race, but most commonly appear to be earth ponies.
